Business Leader setting a strategy.
Podcast Description:

We’re not a tech business. I’m not in a tech role. So why should I know about tech?

Because every business, is a tech business. Hear us out. As technology’s developed over the years, every business has incorporated technology in some aspect. Perhaps with a website, or maybe a digital process replaced a repetitive time-consuming job. Think about your average day, how much of your routine involves a digital product? So, despite not directly operating within the tech sector, you are in-fact a tech business. Which is why, as a business leader, you must understand tech.

From our experience this statement is either agreed with, or we’re met with one of the following responses:

1.    "I understand, but I’m just too busy."

2.    "I’ve got a tech team to deal with that."

We get it. As a business leader you have many plates to spin and a limited number of time to spin them in. The good news is, however, that we’re not insisting you become a tech expert. We’re certainly not suggesting you should know how to code. When it comes to the implementation, you can pass that on to your tech team, whilst you remain firmly on the strategic side.

To be strategic, you need to know enough to ask the questions and interpret your team’s answers. You must understand how technology effects your business, whether it can provide a benefit or is more of a risk.

Yes, your team are the experts in their field and will no doubt be able to advise you. But, they don’t have an overview of the entire business so it’s unlikely they can truly judge the risk or benefit inits entirety. As a business leader, it’s you who has the final say.

Our advice?

1.    Hire smartly. Whether that’s an external tech agency or an internal team. Hiring strategic experts with specific tech experience will give you the clarity and confidence you need to progress.

2.    Keep up. Tech moves fast and it’s essential that you stay in the know. Block out two 30 minute sessions a week; one to scan what’s new and another to dive into a topic in greater depth. Podcasts, books, training courses – there are some great resources out there that are created specifically for business leaders. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes to your strategic thinking.

3.    Ask the questions. Tech can be complex, but its application should make perfect sense. If your team can’t explain it simply and clearly, then something’s off.

Tech can change your business for the better.

No, that's not an exaggeration. It can reduce manual processes, improve CX, heighten your profits…the list goes on. It’s role in your strategy is significant. To disregard it or claim it doesn’t fall into your role as a business leader is reckless. Why? Because every business is a tech business.

Need clarity? Looking to use tech for strategic gain?

Our next training series, designed specifically for business leaders, is launching soon. Get in touch for more details.
